Reflection

Yuedu Reading Party | 2021·5·27

A total of 11 students shared their reflections about the books. Let's take a look at some of the excellent insights.

Nonviolent Communication shared by Qi Yufei

Reflection: when we abandon hidden mental violence, love will naturally be revealed. Language violence refers to verbal accusations, ridicule, denial, preaching and arbitrary interruptions, refusal to respond, and arbitrary comments and conclusions. The emotional and spiritual trauma caused by it is even more painful than physical harm. These unintentional or deliberate language violence make people more and more indifferent, distant and hostile to others. We should learn how to conduct nonviolent communication with others. First, express yourself honestly. Then listen to others with concern. Don't criticize or accuse anytime you want.

Love in the Time of Cholera shared by Wang Yongqin

Reflection: people talking about love only love themselves. Just as the doctor said, "I married her because of her pride, solemnity and strength, as well as a little bit of my vanity," but not because of love. Fermina discovers that her husband Dr. Urbino has been having an affair with an American woman, Miss Lynch. Realizing his reputation could be ruined by this, Dr. Urbino chooses to take his moral responsibility. Everyone feels sorry for Ariza's love for Fermina. If they did get married back then, would he cheat considering his personality? Would his love for Fermina never fade, just as his love for the innocent self?

The Sufferings and Glories of Communist Party of China shared by Cheng Qingqing

Reflection: the stories of those days will impress both the teller and the listener. The answer was not as complicated as today. Just say if you are afraid or not. Simple, but tough. Better than any other answers. This is a choice at a crossroads, whetherto sacrifice life and devotion to yourself or to the Party. There's only one life to live. Life is wonderful. What is the bigger test than life and death?

Life shared by Yang Cuiting

Reflection: we often say society should forge ahead, and as a person, you should move on, too. Life is like this. You won't be satisfied all the time. But we can't lose our enthusiasm for life. There are many things worth loving. Don't be disappointed by just one aspect of your life. Life is nothing but a complex of contradictions and choices. There is no right or wrong, but whether we have the courage to make choices in contradictions and bear all the consequences.

Quit Procrastination shared by Wang Yuting

Reflection: Procrastination is an act of failing to self-regulate and delaying what is planned to be done in spite of expected harmful consequences. Procrastination is a common phenomenon, which will have a negative impact on people's physical and mental health if it gets severe. This book gradually unveils the truth behind mysteries of behavioral patterns of procrastination, the harm of procrastination, and the underlying causes of procrastination. How do we fight against procrastination? The book offers detailed strategies for coping with every type of procrastination, striving to provide appropriate methods to deal with procrastination.

A Brief History of Humankind shared by Zhao Xilong

Reflection: In the course of historical evolution, human beings have formed a set of their own social, economic and cultural models. The era of agricultural didn't bring them a better life because working in the fields including planting wheat, rice and corn, bending down to transplant rice, watering and eradicating pests caused diseases like cervical spondylosis. Battering couldn't meet people's living needs so money and banks emerged. All these things come into being for a fundamental reason - people's need.

This Is Going to Hurt

shared by Fu Tengjiao

Reflection: Not everyone's treatment is smooth. When encountering untreatable health conditions, death will not spare your life regardless of your social status or things at stake. When you tried your best and still couldn't save him or her, you could do nothing but watch and let it go, which is probably a normality that doctors face every day. The author's complaint is a way to heal himself and prevent himself from getting numb in such a normality. However, the author gave up his career anyway. In fact, all walks of life, regardless of the salary or whether it's respected or not, are hard and repetitive work. After the novelty wears off, we should still have the courage to mock ourselves and find the reason to persist. If you persist in being a doctor, then you have to convince yourself that these tragedies are just part of your daily work. When you encounter untreatable diseases, you can't aways think about fate. Every time I think about it, I become more understanding about the profession of doctor.

As a further implementation of "Literary Work Reading for Youth in Hangzhou" in HIAS, the Reading Parting is also a platform for HIAS youth to exchange views and present themselves. According to western canon, the real function of reading classics is to improve the development of inner self. A deep study of classics will not make people better or worse, nor make citizens more useful or harmful. Self-talk in your mind is not a social reality in essence. The classics are all about appropriate usage of your own loneliness, whose ultimate form is the encounter between a person and his own death.

Sharers tell the others what they read, saw, and heard in the form of language, and the others also give feedback of their own experiences. This is the real meaning of the Reading Party. So far, the first "Yuedu Reading Party" of HIAS has officially ended. We are looking forward to your next attendance.
