Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study of UCAS Held Its First Chinese Chess Competition

It was the day of Cold Dew with a gentle breeze and a fine drizzle in the air that heralded the autumn on October 9, 2021. In order to enrich the spiritual and cultural life and create a good atmosphere on campus, the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study of the UCAS (hereinafter referred to as HIAS), a new-type teaching and research institute located by the West Lake, held its first Chinese chess competition. This competition was jointly initiated by the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering and the trade union of HIAS, and was undertaken by the trade union group of the said school. The competitors were faculty members from HIAS and students from the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, and the judges volunteer students from the school. It was an individual round-robin competition held in 4 rounds for half a day.

Qi Hongxing, Secretary of the General Party Branch of the school, delivered an opening speech before the competition, expressing welcome to and encouraging all competitors. Secretary Qi Hongxing, on behalf of Dean Dai Ning, expressed his aspiration to rejuvenate traditional Chinese culture in HIAS with this competition. He expected the competitors to feel the profoundness of the traditional Chinese culture from playing the Chinese chess, achieve the "supreme excellence in breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting", harbor a benevolent spirit by learning from the men of virtues, and show their excellence, style and cultural superiority.

The chess and chess clock used in this competition were provided by the Hangzhou Branch of China Qi-Yuan. The competition was held in two halves, with two rounds in each half and a ten-minute intermission.

Review and discussion

After four rounds of fierce competition, He Jiale, a teacher from the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, won the championship in the faculty group with great presence of mind and excellent skills. Tao Peng and Fan Tengfei won the second place, and Sun Aiai, Zhang Yue and Li Jingzhou the third. In the student group, Zhu Zeyu from Shao Jianda's Studio won the first place, Shao Yunkai and Zhang Wanglin came second, and Mei Hongyu, Wang Dawei and Li Linhao third. In the final part of the competition, Qi Hongxing presented awards to the winners.

The players all showed great expectations for the next chess competition, and for a larger scale and experts to be invited. Fan Tengfei, a faculty member from the Infrastructure Department, expressed his happiness about the competition that rekindled his interest in chess, and his gratitude for the trade union for organizing it.

The competition was successfully held, not only providing an opportunity for chess enthusiasts at HIAS to express themselves, but also encouraging them to further appreciate the infinite charm of Chinese chess. The competition has played a positive role in enriching the cultural life on the campus, enhancing the communication between teachers and students, exposing postgraduates in the modern era to the influence of traditional cultural thoughts and helping them improve their comprehensive quality.
