At 9:00 am on September 2, Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), UCAS held the opening ceremony for freshmen enrolled in 2021.Academician Wang Jianyu, President of HIAS, Academician Tan Weihong, Dean of the HIAS School of Molecular Medicine, Ma Lisong, Secretary of the Party Committee of HIAS, Zheng Chonghui, Member of the Party Committee and Executive Vice President of HIAS, and Fang Xiaoping, Member of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee of HIAS attended the ceremony. Wearing the school badge, 426 new students gathered together to start their HIAS learning journey with a high-spirited attitude.Fang Xiaoping, Member of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee of HIAS, presided over the opening ceremony.

According to the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, the opening ceremony was held both offline and online with a main venue and two sub-venues. Before the ceremony, the entrance ceremony was held for the college leaders and representatives of teachers and students from 8 secondary colleges. High-spirited and vigorous, they showed the style of HIAS teachers and students. Then, online interaction between the main venue and sub-venues was conducted, enlivening the atmosphere and bringing everyone closer.
At 9 am, the ceremony kicked off with the magnificent national anthem.
Speech by Academician Wang Jianyu
On behalf of all the teachers of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and HIAS, UCAS,Academician Wang Jianyu extended a warm welcome to the 426 new postgraduate and doctoral students enrolled in 2021 and delivered an important speech. Academician Wang Jianyu said in his speech that 2021 was an extraordinary year as it marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. At the celebration of the 100th anniversary, General Secretary Xi Jinping said that "Chinese youth in the new era should take the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as their own responsibility, enhance the ambition, backbone and confidence of being Chinese, live up to the times, live up to the glory, and live up to the ardent expectations of the Party and the people! "
In his speech, Academician Wang Jianyu expressed three expectations for all freshmen:the ambition to work hard and serve the country faithfully; the confidence to be open-minded and dedicated; the backbone to face difficulties and move forward bravely.He said that born in a prosperous age, the students shall strive for continue self-improvement and become a "powerful generation" that can take on the responsibility of national rejuvenation. At the opening ceremony, the 2020-2021 school year's merit students, outstanding student leaders, and models for merit students were also awarded to set a good example for freshmen.Zheng Chonghui, Member of the Party Committee and Executive Vice President of HIAS, announced the list of winners. Ma Lisong, Secretary of the Party Committee of HIAS, presented awards to the winners and took a group photo.A total of 33 students won the honorary title of "Merit Student", 4 students of "Outstanding Student Leader", and 2 students of "Model for Merit Students".
Speech by Wang Zijian, representative of freshmen
Wang Zijian, a postgraduate student majoring in Bioinformatics from the School of Life and Health Sciences,delivered a speech as the representative of 2021 freshmen.He said he has always been inspired by the spirit of scientists and that of "Two Bombs and One Satellite". With the progress of the times, HIAS has further carried forward the school-running concept of integrating science and education, putting talent training first, conducting collaborative innovation and serving the country. It is the best platform to realize our dreams. Wang Zijian also shared with all students that "In the next few years, we must be fearless and reach for advanced science; At the same time, we need to have full faith in our potential and believe that we can make important discoveries; Finally, we must have the courage to take responsibility." Speech by Liu Yuan, representative of senior students
Liu Yuan, a representative of postgraduate students in school and student of the School of Molecular Medicine, shared her thoughts and insights with the freshmen on how to start her own scientific research, how to find the research she is interested in, how to become an excellent postgraduate, and how to make her three-year campus life wonderful and fulfilling. Liu Yuan said, "Opportunities come from preparation, and success comes from persistence." Diligence, research, and perseverance lead to successful learning. On the tortuous and long journey of scientific research, we need to make long-term efforts and accumulation, and we should never give up when facing difficulties. It is those who can stand loneliness who can seize the opportunity. Success lies in "persistent efforts".
Speech by Zhang Haiyan, representative of teachers
Zhang Haiyan, a young teacher of the School of Environment, delivered a speech as a teacher representative. Based on her own study and work experience, Ms. Zhang Haiyan shared with the freshmen her explorations of and insights on the scientific research in the past 12 years after graduation. Her sharing focused on three aspects, including sense of responsibility and ambition with strong patriotism; focus on study and scientific research for self-discipline, self-reliant and self-improvement; kindness and cooperation with others. Finally, Ms. Zhang said that there are no constant questions or absolute answers to life. Even for the same thing, everyone has different understandings and perceptions. As for the significance of knowledge, perception and feelings acquired in the postgraduate stage, you need to find out for yourself.
