On the afternoon of May 26, a delegation headed by Wang Yanfen, Managing Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and Vice Presidents Xu Zhongping and Niu Xiaoli visited Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), UCAS for investigation. Wang Jianyu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of HIAS, and Zheng Chonghui, Executive Vice President of HIAS, accompanied them on this investigation and attended the symposium.
At the symposium, Wang Jianyu first extended a warm welcome to Wang Yanfen and her delegation and expressed his heartfelt thanks to UCAS for its long-term concern and support for HIAS. According to Wang Jianyu, HIAS's initial results in various aspects of work achieved since its establishment are inseparable from the strong support of UCAS. Next, HIAS will continue to carry forward the Chinese Academy of Sciences and UCAS' spirit of "Two Bombs and One Satellite" and adhere to running the institute via science and education integration. By staying true to its original aspiration and mission of serving the country and benefiting the people through scientific and technological innovation, HIAS will make efforts and shoulder its responsibilities in cultivating new sci-tech talent and climbing new peaks in scientific research. It will strive to scale new heights in realizing the high-quality development of HIAS, contributing to meeting the major needs of China and serving local socio-economic development.
Later, Zheng Chonghui gave a detailed report on the current construction situation, work progress and achievements of HIAS in ten aspects, including enrollment and teaching, scientific research, faculty, and innovation and entrepreneurship.
After listening to this work report, Wang Yanfen fully affirmed the construction achievements of HIAS. She said, "HIAS, as a branch of UCAS in Hangzhou, has adhered to UCAS's school-running concept of integrating science and education, putting talent training first, conducting collaborative innovation and serving the country. HIAS has been among UCAS's top branches outside Beijing in the overall construction progress, with remarkable results achieved." She raised three expectations and requirements for HIAS's work in the next stage.First, efforts should be made to carefully plan discipline construction.HIAS should actively explore a way to develop its disciplines based on its reality. It should start with some disciplines with a good foundation, using them to drive the overall development of other disciplines and majors.Second, plans should be made to select high-level teachers for HIAS.HIAS should attract talent by accelerating the construction of the main campus and making full use of local talent policies. Using the clustered scientific research resources of relevant institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, HIAS should vigorously introduce all kinds of outstanding young sci-tech talent from home and abroad and establish a high-level teaching team.Third, steps should be taken to thoroughly implement the purpose of training builders and successors of socialism with Chinese characteristics.By bearing in mind General Secretary Xi Jinping's earnest instructions on higher education, HIAS should adhere to taking moral-based cultivation as the fundamental task and integrate ideological and political education into the whole process of education and teaching. It should continuously teach students patriotism and contribute to building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and cultivating socialist builders and successors.
Xu Zhongping and Niu Xiaoli affirmed the work of HIAS and provided it with in-depth guidance on student-related matters, education funds and logistics support. They also said, "In the future work, UCAS will continue to support the development and construction of HIAS and ensure the smooth advancement of HIAS's work in all respects."
Later, Wang Yanfen and her delegation visited some laboratories in the School of Life and Health Sciences and the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, while inspecting teaching buildings, student apartments and expert apartments.
