Ouyang Ziyuan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), is a pioneer in meteoritics and astrochemistry in China. Born in Ji'an, Jiangxi in 1935, he graduated from the Beijing Institute of Geology in 1956 and from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics under CAS in 1960, majoring in ore deposits. He is now a research fellow at the Institute of Geochemistry, CAS, and a senior consultant at the National Astronomical Observatories. He is also a visiting professor at 16 universities, including Peking University, University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, Sun Yat-sen University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, and China University of Geosciences. In addition, he is honorary president of Tianjin University of Technology, Guizhou University and Nanchang Institute of Technology, and honorary chairman of the Guizhou Association for Science and Technology. He used to serve as Director of the Bureau of Resources and Environmental Sciences and Director of the Institute of Geochemistry, CAS, and Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Guizhou Provincial People's Congress.

Academician Ouyang Ziyuan has dedicated himself to meteoritics, lunar science, and earth and planetary sciences for more than 60 years. He has received a number of awards and honors, including the National Science Congress Prize, State Natural Science Award and Science and Technology Progress Award, Guizhou Provincial Highest Science and Technology Award and First Award for Outstanding Talent, First Prize for Natural Science and Science and Technology Progress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Grand Prize for Science and Technology Progress of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Individual Outstanding Contribution Award of the Commission for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, Grand Prize of the State Science and Technology Advancement Award, and National Model Worker. In 2013, the International Astronomical Union approved to name the asteroid numbered 8919 as "Ouyangziyuan". Professor Ouyang Ziyuan has published more than 600 papers and 18 monographs, and edited 20 books. He has trained 76 graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral students.
