Zhang Sen, who graduated from the Department of Physics of Hangzhou University in 1959, was sent by the Zhejiang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to the Institute of Computing Technology, CAS from 1958 to 1959 for advanced study and development of the first generation of mainframe computers. He is one of the earliest experts engaged in computer teaching and research in China. From 1988 to 1989, he went to Indiana University for collaborative research with the Department of Computer Science. Since 1989, he has paid several visits to and lectured at the University of Toronto and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He became an associate professor in 1983 and was promoted to professor in 1985, being the second professor of computer science in Zhejiang Province. From 1984 to 1998, he was head of the Department of Computer Science at Hangzhou University.
