Tan Weihong is Dean of the School of Molecular Medicine, Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study, UCAS, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), President of the Institute of Basic Medicine and Cancer, CAS, and President of the Cancer Hospital of UCAS. He is a member of the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education, the Advisory Committee of the Department of Chemical Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the expert committee on nano programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology. He is also the associate editor of CCS Chemistry and a member of editorial boards of national and international journals such as ACS Nano and National Science Review.

Academician Tan Weihong has long been committed to the education and research of biochemistry, biochemical analysis, and molecular medicine. He is the first to put forward the novel concept of living cell-based nucleic acid aptamer selection internationally. He has developed molecular probes and targeted drugs for specific recognition of cancerous and precancerous cells, and established a variety of new methods and technologies for diagnosis and treatment of major diseases based on functional nucleic acids, providing new strategies, tools and materials for diagnostic medicine. He has published over 800 papers in Science and other academic journals with an H-index of 149. He has been on the list of highly cited researchers worldwide for seven consecutive years from 2014 to 2020 He was awarded the Second Prize of the State Natural Science Award in 2014, Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in 2018, the American Chemical Society Award for Spectrochemical Analysis in 2018, the PITTCON Achievement Award for Analytical Chemistry in 2019, and Ralph N. Adams Achievement Award for Bioanalytical Chemistry in 2019.
