Zhao Guoping is a molecular microbiologist. He launched the genomics and life "omics" research in China and cloned some genetic disease-causing genes. He has presided over the research on the genomes, functional genomes, comparative genomes, and evolutionary genomes of some important microorganisms, and analyzed the molecular evolution of SARS-CoV. He has made pioneering efforts in the fields of bacterial metabolic enzyme acetylation and the gut microbiome. He has set up and served as director of the Key Laboratory of Synthetic Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), making significant breakthroughs in yeast chromosome reconstruction, metabolic flux research, engineering of natural compound cell factories, and gene editing technology research and development. He has established the Biomedical Big Data Center to build a national comprehensive biomedical big data service platform and carry out basic research.

Introduction to the lecture:

I grew up with the development of the People's Republic of China. When I was a teenager, I became very interested in life sciences. When I was young and China was at a critical moment of development, I decided to devote myself to life sciences. I was once sent to work in rural areas as an educated youth, then I went to college and obtained my PhD abroad. My research ranges from agriculture, microbiology and biochemistry to genomics and synthetic biology. I served as the production brigade's leader, student union president, college teacher, and company manager. Now I'm a laboratory director, leader of a research institute, and director of a national research center. My passion for life sciences and my love for the Chinese people have remained unchanged. I always enjoy engaging in life science research, knowing the law of life activities, developing the biological technology industry, and serving the Chinese people's well-being.
