His main research fields are chemical form and environmental toxicology and health. He has participated in the Chinese National Arctic and Antarctic Research Expeditions, promoted the research on persistent toxic pollutants in China, and started new academic directions such as the discovery of new environmental pollutants and toxicological research. He was responsible for and completed the first and second phases of the 863 project for screening and control of environmental endocrine disruptors in China, the first and second phases of the national POPs 973 project, the first national support project for POPs control technology in China, 2 phases of the innovation group project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the major fund project "Environmental Processes and Toxicological Effects of Typical Persistent Organic Pollutants" of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In addition, he won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award three times.

In addition,Professor Chen Lingling of the School of Life Science, HIAS participated inthe"Research on New Technologies for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric Diseases-Establishment of and Clinical Research on New Technologies for Diagnosis of Prader-Willi Syndrome" andProfessor Hu Ronggui took part in the"Research on New Technologies for Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuropsychiatric Diseases-Research on New Technologies for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric Autism Spectrum Disorders Based on Retinic Acid Signaling Pathway". Both of the projectshave been successfully approved.

Since its establishment in 2019, HIAS has actively organized the application for various scientific research projects. At present, it has obtained the application qualifications for such projects as national key R&D programs, the projects funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the key R&D programs of Zhejiang Province, and the programs funded by the Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation.

In 2020, it undertook the "Background No.2 Project" of Class A Strategic Pilot Science and Technology Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the "Proteome and Metabolome Research of Steady-State Standardization System in Chinese Natural Population" of Class B Strategic Pilot Science and Technology Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the "Narrow Line Width Laser and Femtosecond Light Comb Space Engineering Development Contract of High-precision Time-frequency Laboratory Cabinet Scientific Experimental System" of the National Time Service Center Project. The total project amount was more than RMB 70 million. The STS regional key project "Research and Development of Molecular Diagnostic Kit for Tumor and Testing Instrument" led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences has passed the expert review for project approval, and the project funded by the Zhejiang Soft Science Research Program "Practical Research on Smart Government Governance Based on Big Data-Taking Hangzhou City as an Example" has been approved and publicized. At the same time, HIAS has participated in the application for 7 national key R&D projects of "gravitational wave detection", taking the first step to undertake national projects.

As a new-type teaching and scientific research institution, HIAS will continuously improve its scientific research and innovation support capability, actively undertake major national and provincial scientific research projects, and contribute to national and regional innovative development.
