The 9th International Conference on Pacific Rim Laser Damage (PLD 2021) was successfully held in Hangzhou from May 23 to 25, 2021, which was co-hosted by the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and co-organized by Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), UCAS and Chinese Laser Press. The conference was held both online and offline, attended by more than 140 experts and scholars from the United States, Germany, Italy, China and other countries.
At the opening ceremony, Long Zhang, executive director of the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering of HIAS, delivered an opening speech on behalf of the organizing committee, introducing the history of the international conference and the overall situation of this conference. Dongyao Wang, deputy director of the Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS, delivered a speech. Subsequently, Wanguo Zheng, researcher of the Research Center of Laser Fusion of the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP), Vladimir Pervak, professor of Ludwig Maximillians University, Zhouling Wu, chairman of ZC Optoelectronic Technologies. Ltd., and Yuxin Leng, researcher of SIOM (represented by researcher Yi Xu), delivered invited lectures at the conference. A total of 19 famous experts at home and abroad gave invited lectures on related topics. The conference focused on i) high power laser damage (UV through IR), ii) ultrafast through CW laser irradiation effects, iii) laser ablation and laser machining, iv) high laser damage resistant coatings, v) defects, contamination, polishing, and surface damage, vi) characterization techniques and measurement protocols, vii) mechanisms, modeling, and simulations, viii) nonlinear laser crystals, ix) laser ceramics, and x) optical glasses and fibers. Participants shared their latest research progress at the conference and engaged in a lively debate. The venue was full of a strong academic atmosphere. They spoke highly of the organization of this conference and believed that the conference provided a platform for academic exchanges for researchers in relevant scientific and technological fields around the Pacific rim and the world and promoted the scientific and technological development in this field.
Then the experts and scholars attending the conference visited the Cloud Art Park of HIAS, increasing their understanding of HIAS. And they praised the educational philosophy of HIAS.
As an organizer of the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering of HIAS, SIOM is the institute with the most comprehensive research fields and the most complete R&D system in the fields of optics and lasers in China. The successful holding of this conference provided domestic counterparts with a good opportunity to participate in international exchanges, expanded cooperation channels with well-known scientific research institutions at home and abroad, and increased China’s international influence in high power laser damage and optics materials. In addition, HIAS, as an organizer of the conference, took this opportunity to boost its visibility.
