Liu Hui, a doctoral student enrolling in the School of Fundamental Physics and Mathematical Sciences in 2020 at Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), UCAS, was awarded the funding from the "Graduate Student Cultivation Program of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences based on International Cooperation - German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)” in 2021, and recently went to the Arnold Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics, University of Munich, Germany, for joint doctoral training. Liu Hui, tutored by Professor Geng Chaoqiang at the School of Fundamental Physics and Mathematical Sciences of HIAS, majors in theoretical physics, and will join the research group on "Quantum Structure of Non-Perturbative Objects" for 22 months under Professor Georgi Dvali. Liu Hui, one of the first students recruited since the establishment of HIAS, has become the first one to receive a scholarship to study abroad.
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), founded in 1925 as an alliance, represents 241 German universities and 103 student groups. It is currently one of the largest educational exchange institutions in the world, and committed to promoting the exchanges between German universities and students and their counterparts outside Germany and carrying out funding schemes for all countries and all institutions. The "Graduate Student Cultivation Program of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences based on International Cooperation - German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)” in 2021 sent students to German colleges and universities based on the cooperation between UCAS and DAAD and research institutes except Max Planck Institutes and Fraunhofer Institutes.
HIAS attaches great importance to the international cultivation of students. The Research and Development Department (The International Affairs Office) worked with various schools and the International Cooperation Office of UCAS for organizing the application for sponsored study abroad. After being reviewed by experts from both China and Germany, Liu Hui obtained the qualification and was sent to Germany with the support of his tutor in China Professor Geng Chaoqiang, School of Fundamental Physics and Mathematical Sciences, the Research and Development Department (The International Affairs Office), the Academic Affairs Department (The Admissions and Degrees Office) , and the Student Affairs Department.
The dispatch of the first program-sponsored student marked a new breakthrough in realizing the international cultivation of students at HIAS and international exchanges and cooperation under the new situation. HIAS will take this opportunity to follow the world's cutting-edge technology, explore good modes, expand channels, and provide vigorous support for cultivating talents with an international vision.
