On May 9, the Symposium on Preparations for the Establishment of the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and Inauguration Ceremony of HIAS was held at Huanglong Hotel. Zhou Jiangyong, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Hangzhou Municipal Committee, and Bai Chunli, President and Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group of CAS, delivered speeches. Xu Liyi, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Hangzhou Municipal Committee and Mayor of Hangzhou Municipal People's Government, and Xu Tao, Vice President of UCAS and a member of CAS, jointly announced the inauguration of HIAS.

According to the plan, HIAS will consist of eight schools, namely the School of Fundamental Physics and Mathematical Sciences, School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, School of Chemistry and Materials Science, School of Life and Health Sciences, School of Medical Physics and Information, School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, School of Microelectronic Engineering, and School of Cyberspace Security.
The transition area of HIAS will be located in Cloud Town, with an area of about 90,000 m2. It will offer laboratories, classrooms, offices, canteens, the culture and sports center, student apartments, and expert apartments. The permanent campus will consist of the Shilongshan Area and the Shuangpu New Area. Preparations are being accelerated.
Facing the development of cutting-edge science and technology in the world, HIAS will cultivate and gather talents, carry out cutting-edge scientific and technological research, and develop entrepreneurship and innovation activities around major national needs and needs of regional economic and social development. In terms of talent training, it will introduce and cultivate international, innovative, entrepreneurial and interdisciplinary high-level talents and build an open and shared high-level talent training base; in terms of scientific and technological research, it will focus on emerging fields such as AI, quantum technology and big health; in terms of entrepreneurship and innovation, it aims to create supporting platforms such as the SME service center, science and technology financial service center, scientific and technological achievement transfer and transformation center, intellectual property operations center, and maker space, and build a scientific and technological innovation base and new industry incubation base.
