On the morning of August 19, the 2020 University Students Summer Camp of the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), was officially opened. Wang Jianyu, a member of CAS and President of HIAS, Ma Lisong, Secretary of the Party Committee of HIAS, and Zheng Chonghui, Executive Vice President of HIAS, attended the opening ceremony. Professor Dai Ning, Executive Dean of the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, presided over the ceremony. The summer camp attracted students from key universities across China.

Ma Lisong delivered an opening speech for the summer camp. Using the admission letter of UCAS that went viral on the Internet some time ago as an example and starting with the spirit of exploring the universe, seeking science and technology innovation, and bravely scaling the heights advocated by UCAS in the new era and the due pursuit of UCAS students, Ma Lisong encouraged students to explore their dreams and pursuits in the summer camp, to think, discover, and raise and solve problems in the ocean of science, and to become their best selves. According to Secretary Ma, HIAS has prepared an academic feast for everyone, and students will appreciate the demeanor of academic masters, feel the charm of science, meet outstanding partners, and show themselves in the summer camp. He believed that students will definitely like the precious gift of "dreams, hopes, knowledge and friendship" prepared by HIAS, and the summer camp will also become a memory worth treasuring in their lives.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Jianyu gave a presentation titled "Colorful World of Light and Mysterious Photons", showing students the charm of science in the world of light. As the commander-in-chief of "Mozi", the world's first quantum science experimental satellite, and chief engineer of "Taiji-1", China's first satellite to conduct experiments on key technologies related to space-based gravitational wave detection, Wang Jianyu began with "what light is" and introduced wave-particle duality of light, gradually unveiling the mystery of the two major scientific satellites for students from the elementary to the profound.

Why is quantum theory used in encrypted communications? Wang Jianyu used the revolutionary model opera Red Lantern as a metaphor: A communist liaison man carried a codebook to the guerrillas but was intercepted by the Japanese army. This is a matter of confidentiality, which can be well achieved by using conditions like the indivisibility of a single photon in quantum mechanics. Wang Jianyu stated that "Mozi" is different from general earth observation satellites. Quantum satellites require space-earth coordination and smooth communication links between space and earth, which is also one of the seven key technologies in quantum satellites.

From the current situation of gravitational wave detection at home and abroad to the principle of gravitational wave detection, Wang Jianyu introduced to students the Chinese Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detection Program "Taiji", in which the HIAS team has played a significant role. In the next stage, "Taiji-2" will conduct in-orbit verification of most key technologies with high targets. Around 2030, "Taiji-3" will be developed to detect various gravitational-wave objects and cognize the gravitational universe. Looking at the grand blueprints of the Chinese "Taiji" Program, students were overwhelmed by reveries and yearning. Wang Jianyu invited students to join the HIAS family and devote themselves to scientific exploration that turns conception into reality.

Zheng Chonghui gave a presentation titled "Gathering Strength and Taking the Lead—Building a World-class New Teaching and Research Institution", making a systematic, comprehensive and in-depth introduction to the basic situation of HIAS from aspects such as its main body and positioning, schools and scientific research platforms, teaching and research groups, the training system, and campus construction. Zheng Chonghui said that the construction and development of HIAS require many outstanding scientists who dare to be pioneers and a group of students who are determined to pursue their scientific dreams. HIAS is a palace of knowledge, a shrine of science, a fertile soil of freedom, a warm home, and the cradle of scientists. He hoped that students will join the HIAS family and realize your scientific dreams here.

Yi Shiyi from Southwest University made a speech as the camper representative. Yi Shiyi was excited to participate in the HIAS summer camp. She was looking forward to having academic exchanges with scientists to feel and learn their demeanor of pursuing studies meticulously and rigorously, and communicating with outstanding students in the same major, so that they can learn from each other, draw each other's strengths, and make progress together. She also hoped that students can develop critical thinking, deepen understanding and achieve something in their studies.

In the afternoon, Wu Yueliang, a member of CAS and Dean of the School of Fundamental Physics and Mathematical Sciences, Tan Weihong, a member of CAS and Dean of the School of Molecular Medicine, and Wu Jiarui, Executive Dean of the School of Life and Health Sciences, delivered three presentations and had cordial exchanges with the students.

This is the first summer camp of HIAS, which will last for three days and be carried out online. Since its launch in July, the HIAS Summer Camp has attracted wide attention from university students and received more than 400 applications. After the appraisal by the expert groups of all schools, more than 160 students were shortlisted for the selection of outstanding campers. The summer camp features over 35 theme and special presentations. More than 30 experts, including 4 academicians of CAS and CAE and 14 scholars supported by the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, will deliver wonderful presentations.
