On the afternoon of November 7, the Science Festival of the Chinese Academy of Sciences·Hangzhou: 4th CAS Science Festival and 1st UCAS Science Festival (Hangzhou Session), with the theme of "Explore the Unknown with Curiosity and Link the Future with Science", was held at HIAS. The event was sponsored by the Talents Office of the CPC Hangzhou Municipal Committee and HIAS and undertaken by the Talents Office of the CPC Hangzhou Xihu District Committee, the Science and Technology Bureau of Xihu District, the Science and Technology Association of Xihu District, the Management Committee of Cloud Town of Xihu District, and the Science and Technology Innovation Center of HIAS.

At the beginning of the opening ceremony, the students of Hangzhou Guancheng Experimental School recited the Youth of China, a famous prose written by Liang Qichao, an outstanding scholar in the Qing Dynasty. "Therefore, the responsibility bestowed by the times falls on nobody but us youth. Professor Geng Chaoqiang, Executive Dean of the School of Fundamental Physics and Mathematical Sciences of HIAS, delivered a keynote speech entitled Talking about the Beauty of Quantum Universe Physics: From Micro Minima to Macro Great World. "Where did we come from? How did the universe start? Can the laws of physics be unified? What makes up the physical world?" Questions raised by Professor Geng Chaoqiang have triggered students' wonderful imaginations of the origin of human beings and the vast universe. "In general, symmetry is beauty, while beauty is also symmetry. Beauty is truth, and the truth is beauty. But is the most symmetrical the most beautiful? Must the most symmetrical be the real expression of the universe? Symmetry displays the beauty of the universe, while asymmetry generates the reality of the universe." With vivid examples, Professor Geng Chaoqiang gave students a better understanding of the theoretical truth hidden behind natural phenomena, ranging from atomic quarks to the starry universe. The wonderful narrative seemed to allow students present to appreciate various magical phenomena in the quantum world.
In order to introduce the knowledge of atmospheric pressure, the scientific performance team of the Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum performed Invisible Giant, an experimental show. The commentators started with humorous and funny words. The students experienced the "Magdeburg Hemispheres" pulled together with force and felt the power of the atmospheric pressure giant... The students present all felt surprised. It turned out that the atmospheric pressure that could not be seen or felt was always around us.
Research Fellow Qi Hongxing, Vice President of the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering of HIAS, delivered a popular science speech entitled See the World from a Spectral Perspective. Why is the Chinese character看 (see) composed of手 (hands) and目 (eyes)? At the beginning of the report, Qi Hongxing picked out看 from the topic of the speech and then introduced the scientific reason behind "light imaging" from the history that ancient Chinese people created Chinese characters. The scientific concept of spectroscopy was next elicited through daily questions such as "what is light" and "what is the difference between black and white cameras and color ones".Starting from the question of how to see the moon clearly on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, he introduced a historical event 20 years ago and vividly explained the strategic significance of our vigorous development of high-resolution Earth-observation satellite and Fengyun (FY) meteorological satellites as a great power. From lunar exploration to Mars exploration, the Chinese people are getting farther and farther in observing the planets. Qi Hongxing asked, "In the future, who will our country depend on when we explore deeper in the universe?" The children here raised their hands without hesitation and shouted, "Us!" That was followed by thunderous applause.
Finally, students from the School of Environment and the School of Molecular Medicine of HIAS cooperated with science teachers from Hangzhou Shangsi Middle School to complete HIAS Scientific Exploration, the experimental show. The wonderful scientific experiments enabled everyone to participate in the science festival to the greatest extent.The soap foam on the hand was lighted but the palm did not get hurt. The magical experiment attracted the students to try it. The homemade rocket launcher and smoke shells pushed the atmosphere to a climax.
Many HIAS students have also benefited from the experience. Cheng Qingqing, the performer of the science popularization experiment show, is a postgraduate from the HIAS School of Fundamental Physics and Mathematical Sciences. As one of the Top 400 of the 2021 China Hangzhou University Student Entrepreneurship Competition, she is interested in science popularization. "How to turn profound scientific knowledge into expressions that children understand and are interested in and design funny experiments is indeed difficult." In her spare time, Cheng Qingqing spent a lot of time preparing for the experimental show. She not only asked her tutor about how to explain the laws accurately but also discussed with the science teacher how to attract children's attention. "It's a great sense of achievement to see the children excited!" Cheng Qingqing said, "Every scientific research participant should shoulder the important task of spreading scientific knowledge. I'm very delighted to participate in it and make a small contribution."
The ancient Chinese philosopher used Taiji to describe the origin of the universe. In HIAS, there is a famous laboratory named "Taiji", the Taiji Laboratory for Gravitational Wave Universe (Hangzhou), which is the core support platform of the Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detection Program "Taiji". After leaving the mysterious and profound Taiji Laboratory for Gravitational Wave Universe, the children could still find something wonderful about science. There were also interesting science and technology fashion exhibitions and "Playing with Science" creative fairs. Observing Mogao Cave through VR, they could feel traditional art. In addition, they witnessed the reversi competition between human and computer, the paper aircraft launcher made by chopsticks + robot, UAV,Ebru, moon-shaped fan... Not only did they see "Dabai", the science star of HIAS, but they also took group photos with guest stars "Optimus Prime" and "Hornet".
