Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), UCAS, a well-known scientific research institute with superior strength, is located in Xihu District, Hangzhou City. Let's walk into the "mysterious and low-key" institute and see what scientists are doing here.
Wang Jianyu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of HIAS, said that as an important window of the Chinese Academy of Sciences system in Hangzhou, Zhejiang for only two years, HIAS is a new integrated institution for scientific research, education, innovation and production that is small yet high-quality at a high standard.
"CAS's advantages lie in its ability to organize teams of people from all disciplines to conduct interdisciplinary research. Since its establishment, CAS has given full play to its institutional advantages to undertake major national projects and solve the country's major practical needs. HIAS should help Hangzhou achieve great breakthroughs in applied scientific research," said Wang Jianyu.HIAS has always focused on gravitational wave precision measurement, systems health science, and intelligent technology. Based on the advantages of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the fields, 8 interdisciplinary secondary science and education units have been established.
In his view, although small in size, HIAS is a quality institute. In this regard, it is like the world-renowned MIT in the USA. Both of them are small but world-class institutes with a few disciplines.
"Among all institutions and research institutes across China, only the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the 'national team', can gather 14 academicians in a short time," said Ma Lisong, Secretary of the Party Committee of HIAS. He continued that HIAS also has 196 dual-employed professors and 93 outstanding young national leading talent, all of whom are elites in their respective fields. This year, HIAS made breakthroughs when it applied for the programs funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China for the first time, with a project approval rate of nearly 30%, higher than the national average. In the scientific research layout, HIAS has also made excellent explorations. For example, interms of physical information, HIAS has built large-scale scientific facilities like the Taiji Laboratory for Gravitational Wave Universe (Hangzhou). When it comes to intelligent science and technology, HIAS has built the Intelligent Computing Laboratory and the Major Scientific and Technological Infrastructure of Multi-dimensional Super Perception with Zhejiang Lab. Regarding life & health, it has set up major scientific and technological units, such as the X-ray FGI Three-Dimensional Nano-microscopic Imaging Device, the Application Research and Transformation Platform of New Cell Tracing Technology for the Exploration of New Methods of Heart Regeneration and the Science and Innovation Center for Drug Target. In terms of new materials, the Astronomical Infrared Material Growth and In-situ Ultra-high Resolution Photoelectric Characterization Platform has been established...
Speaking of the Taiji Laboratory for Gravitational Wave Universe (Hangzhou), the laboratory is a "landmark" project of HIAS. The laboratory was officially unveiled in April this year, marking the official settlement of the core support platform of the Space-borne Gravitational Wave Detection Program "Taiji" in Zhejiang.
"At present, space gravitational wave detection is the most cutting-edge technology in the world. We keep pace with many international scientific research institutions in such technology and are at the forefront of the world," said Wang Jianyu,commander-in-chief of the mission of Taiji-1, a technical verification satellite of China's Space Gravitational Wave Detection Program. He introduced that as a large-scale scientific facility, the Taiji Laboratory is an important part of the Taiji Program.
Not long ago, the Science Festival of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was celebrated in Hangzhou for the first time. In the lab, researchers are popularizing the knowledge of gravitational wave detection to primary school students. "The gravitational wave is very weak. Detecting the wave is equivalent to measuring the acceleration generated by the Himalayas when we use a watermelon to collide with the mountain under extremely weak thrust..." In addition, there are other interesting activities, such as "Walking Towards the Light" lectures, experimental shows for science popularization, "Playing with Science" science and innovation fair... New and funny science activities are leading the public to experience the magic of science.
In order to solve the "last-mile" problem obstructing the transformation of scientific achievements, HIAS has specially established the "Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Industrial Incubation Center". As an industrialization platform carrier set up within HIAS, the Center cooperates with the secondary science and education units of HIAS to give full play to the advantages of the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem continuously built by Hangzhou and enable the implementation of more new achievements, technologies, products and applications in Hangzhou.
This year, HIAS held the firstConference for Science and Technology Innovation, Industries and Finance and released the first online smart engine "Science and Technology Innovation Brain". Moreover, it has integrated the technological demand chain, the science and technology supply chain, the science and technology finance chain, the space security chain and the policy support chain to boost digital reform and development in Zhejiang Province.
As a secondary college directly under the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, HIAS also adheres to the mission of "caring about national affairs and shouldering national responsibilities" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in running schools. "In the future, HIAS will give top priority to cultivating innovative talents with patriotism, aiming at training 'leaders of cutting-edge technologies in the world, developers of independent core technologies and drivers of new industry development', so as to prepare more elites in major scientific and technological engineering fields for the Party and the country," said Ma Lisong.
