He has long been researching space active photoelectric technology and optical quantum measurement technology. His research interests include deep space matter composition detection technology and planetary science instruments, optical quantum LIDAR technology and its applications in mapping and land and sea observation, and quantum precision measurement. He was responsible for the research and development of several effective payloads in national major tasks, such as the Lunar Exploration Program, the first Mars Exploration Project and the special Gaofen satellite projects. He served as Deputy Designer-in-charge of China's first quantum science experimental satellite "Mozi".
He received more than ten national and provincial awards and was awarded the 2018 Newcomb Cleveland Prize by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In recent years, he has published more than 10 papers inScience, Nature, Optical Expressand other journals.
