Tang Gongli received his bachelor's degree in Environmental Chemistry from Nankai University in 1994 and his Ph.D. in Bioorganic Chemistry from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999. After graduation, he went to the University of California for postdoctoral research in the Department of Chemistry. From 2001 to 2003, he worked as a research assistant in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2003, he was appointed as a research fellow at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Website:http://tanggl.sioc.ac.cn

Research Areas:

1) Biosynthesis of natural products:Taking complex natural products with novel structures and significant activities from microorganisms as target molecules, he attempts to reveal the magical biochemical processes in nature from genes and proteins and to understand the new enzymatic reactions and physiological antagonism involved in them; On this basis, on the one hand, he will try to create "non-natural" natural products by combining chemistry and biology, and on the other hand, he will try to activate silenced gene clusters by linking biosynthesis with biological information, so as to discover new natural products.

2) Efficient preparation of complex natural products:Based on biosynthetic pathways, he is committed to using microbial metabolic engineering or synthetic biology methods and strategies to improve the yield of target compounds, change the composition of fermentation products and generate new compounds. Furthermore, efficient preparation routes can be developed by combining them with chemical semi-synthesis or biocatalysis.
